Vengeance is one of the most powerful automatic weapons in Fallout 3. This unique Gatling laser combines an extremely high rate of fire with more damage than the standard Gatling laser, making it devastating against heavily armoured enemies and late-game threats.
Getting it is the difficult part. Vengeance is hidden deep inside Deathclaw Sanctuary, a cave filled with some of the most dangerous enemies in the Capital Wasteland. In this guide, I’ll show you exactly where to find Vengeance, how to prepare for the trip, its correct weapon stats and whether it is worth adding to your loadout.

What Is Vengeance in Fallout 3?
Vengeance is a unique version of the Gatling laser found only in Fallout 3. Like the standard Gatling laser, it is a fully automatic heavy weapon, but Vengeance deals significantly more damage while retaining the same extremely high rate of fire.
What makes it special is simple: sustained damage. Vengeance deals 11 damage per attack compared with 8 from the standard Gatling laser, giving it a base DPS of 220 before character bonuses are taken into account. That makes it one of the strongest automatic weapons in Fallout 3. Unlike some unique weapons, Vengeance is not tied to a quest. You can travel to Deathclaw Sanctuary and retrieve it once you’re confident you can survive the creatures guarding it.

Before You Begin: Preparing for the Journey
Know What You’re Getting Into
Deathclaw Sanctuary is one of Fallout 3’s more dangerous locations. The cave contains multiple Deathclaws and its tight corridors can make it difficult to retreat if several spot you at once. There is no specific level requirement for obtaining Vengeance, but going in poorly equipped can make the trip extremely difficult.
What I Recommend Bringing
- A strong primary weapon: You need to reach Vengeance before you can use it, so bring something capable of dealing with Deathclaws.
- Plenty of Stimpaks: Deathclaws can close distance incredibly quickly and deal heavy damage.
- Med-X: Useful if you want extra damage resistance for the trip through the sanctuary.
- A Stealth Boy: Particularly useful if your Sneak skill is strong and you would rather avoid some encounters.
- Good armour: Power armour can help, but it isn’t required.
- A manual save before entering: Deathclaw Sanctuary is not somewhere you want your last save to be twenty minutes old.
Most importantly, do not invest in Energy Weapons specifically for Vengeance. In Fallout 3, Vengeance is governed by the Big Guns skill. Once you obtain it, you’ll also want a supply of Electron Charge Packs, which are the ammunition used by Vengeance and other Gatling lasers.
Pro Tip: This mission is best attempted at Level 18 or higher. Consider investing in perks like Toughness, Nerd Rage, and Better Criticals.

Getting There: Locating the Deathclaw Sanctuary
Deathclaw Sanctuary is located in the north-western side of the Capital Wasteland, west of Paradise Falls and southwest of Fort Constantine. One of the best nearby landmarks is Broadcast Tower KB5, which sits right beside the sanctuary area.
Useful Landmarks
If you already have nearby locations discovered, you can approach the sanctuary:
- Southwest from Fort Constantine
- West from Paradise Falls
- From Broadcast Tower KB5, which is immediately beside the sanctuary
Expect Deathclaws outside the entrance as well as inside the cave, so don’t assume you’ve reached safety just because you’ve found the map marker.
After completing The Waters of Life, an Enclave camp can also appear on the cliff near the entrance. This is separate from Vengeance itself and isn’t required to obtain the weapon.
Once you’re at the entrance, take a deep breath, check your gear, and save your game.

Into the Depths: Surviving the Deathclaw Sanctuary
Once inside, take your time. Deathclaw Sanctuary is a twisting cave system containing several Deathclaws, and fighting more than one at close range can go badly very quickly. Use Sneak and V.A.T.S. to check corridors before moving forward, and take advantage of narrow passages where you can avoid being surrounded.
Where Vengeance Actually Is
Vengeance is located in the southeastern part of the sanctuary. As you move deeper into the cave, look for a rock formation containing a pool of water stained completely red with blood. Around it are green mushrooms and mutilated human remains.
Vengeance is lying beside — and sometimes partly inside — that blood pool. It is not inside a crate. Occasionally the weapon can become partly hidden underneath one of the bodies, so look carefully around the edge of the pool if you can’t immediately see it.
Claiming Vengeance: Weapon Stats and Power
Once you’ve picked it up, Vengeance immediately becomes one of the strongest sustained-damage weapons available in Fallout 3.
Vengeance Weapon Stats
- Weapon type: Unique Gatling laser
- Skill: Big Guns
- Damage per attack: 11
- Base DPS: 220
- Rate of fire: 20 attacks per second
- Ammo: Electron Charge Pack
- Ammo used per shot: 1
- Magazine capacity: 240
- Reload time: 3 seconds
- Weight: 18
- Value: 2,400 caps
- Repair: Standard Gatling lasers
Vengeance’s biggest advantage over the normal Gatling laser is damage. The standard version deals 8 damage per attack and around 160 base DPS, while Vengeance increases those figures to 11 damage and 220 DPS. Both retain the same rapid rate of fire and 240-round capacity. That makes Vengeance particularly effective against enemies with large health pools, where keeping the weapon trained on the target allows its sustained damage output to shine.

Combat Strategy with Vengeance
Vengeance is at its best when you can keep the barrels trained on a target for several seconds. Rather than treating it like a precision weapon, use it to overwhelm tougher enemies with sustained fire.
Combat Tips
- Raise Big Guns: This is the skill that governs Vengeance in Fallout 3.
- Carry Electron Charge Packs: Its 20-round-per-second rate of fire means ammunition disappears quickly.
- Use short bursts on weaker enemies: Holding the trigger down against every Raider is a good way to waste valuable ammo.
- Save sustained fire for tough targets: Deathclaws, Super Mutant Masters, Enclave troops and other high-health enemies are where Vengeance really earns its name.
- Keep it repaired: Vengeance can be repaired using ordinary Gatling lasers.
- Don’t rely heavily on V.A.T.S.: Its strength is continuous automatic fire rather than carefully aimed individual shots.
Vengeance also has excellent durability, although feeding it enough Electron Charge Packs for prolonged use can become the bigger challenge.
Where Vengeance Is Most Useful
Vengeance isn’t required for any quest, but it can make some of Fallout 3’s tougher late-game encounters considerably easier.
It is particularly useful during:
- Take It Back!, where sustained fire works well against heavily armed enemies.
- Broken Steel, where tougher late-game opponents give high-DPS weapons more room to shine.
- Enclave encounters, especially when fighting groups of heavily armoured soldiers.
- Deathclaw and Super Mutant encounters, where quickly burning through large health pools is valuable.
Because Vengeance is obtainable independently of a questline, you can collect it and keep it available for whichever parts of the game you find most difficult.
Is Vengeance Worth It? Absolutely.
Vengeance is one of the strongest automatic weapons in Fallout 3 and a substantial upgrade over the standard Gatling laser. Its 220 base DPS, huge 240-round magazine and rapid rate of fire make it exceptionally effective against tougher enemies. There are two catches: getting through Deathclaw Sanctuary can be difficult, and the weapon consumes Electron Charge Packs extremely quickly.
If you’re running a Big Guns build, however, Vengeance is absolutely worth collecting. Even if heavy weapons aren’t your main focus, it is a useful late-game option to keep available for particularly difficult fights.

Final Thoughts
Vengeance is exactly what a good Fallout unique weapon should be: powerful, memorable and hidden somewhere dangerous enough to make obtaining it feel like an achievement. Head to Deathclaw Sanctuary, fight or sneak your way to the southeastern section of the caves and look for the blood-filled pool beneath the rock formation. Once you find Vengeance lying among the remains, you’ll have one of Fallout 3’s strongest automatic weapons in your arsenal. Just remember to stock up on Electron Charge Packs — Vengeance burns through them almost as quickly as it burns through enemies.
